Iceland - Snaefellsness Peninsula
Intro
Snaefellsness peninsula is a desolate, picturesque peninsula about 2 hours north of Reykjavik. It is dotted with very small villages and has a national park at the tip.
What I Did
We visited the peninsula in a daytrip from Reykjavik. After getting to the peninsula via Borgarnes, we headed to the north shore and Grundarfjordur. From there, we followed the perimeter roads through Snaefellsjokull National Park and then along the south coast, stopping at some of the attractions and towns along the way.
Neighborhoods/Areas
Borgarnes - Small town between Reykjavik and Snaefellsnes with some food options before the largely deserted roads and very limited options of the peninsula.
Grundarfjordur - Fishing village on the peninsula.
Hellnar and Arnarstapi - Pair of small fishing villages on the western side of the peninsula with a walking trail linking the two.
Attractions
The Settlement Center - Attraction devoted to recreating Iceland's earliest days.
Kirkjufell - Waterfall just outside Grundarfjordur next to an iconic mountain.
Selvallavatn - Waterfall in the middle of the peninsula.
Snaefellsjokull National Park - National park at the western edge of the peninsula. Famous for its volcano, black-sand beaches and rock formations.
Saxholl - Crater in Snaefellsjokull National Park.
